Doctor of Tibetan Medicine, LMT, CFAE

What to expect and how to prepare for your consultation

I will begin by taking a thorough health history, and ask that you be completely honest and forthcoming, as this will allow me to get a clear picture of your background and thereby help you better.  Everything that is shared during your consultation will be kept in strict confidence, unless you give your written permission for me to discuss your case with another practitioner for your benefit.  The space that we create is safe, and you can feel free to speak openly during our time together.

After asking you questions about the nature of your symptoms, diet, various circumstances of your life and health history, I will take your pulse on both wrists, then examine your tongue, eyes, and urine.  Health protocols are derived based on all of this information.

Protocols can include external treatments, changes in diet and lifestyle, flower and gem essences and Tibetan herbal medicine. Please read below to see what each of these may or may not include.

Because Tibetan medicine seeks to create balance I often begin initially with gentler methods of diet and behavior, and/or more mild herbal formulas.  Tibetan herbal formulas work gradually and deeply and may take two weeks or more before you notice a result.  Be prepared to give the medicine time to work in your body and know that lasting change doesn’t occur overnight.  Depending on your particular condition and whether it is chronic or acute, you may need to take the herbs anywhere from a few weeks to several months.  The formulas you take may be adjusted over time, as your body shifts and we find just the right formula(s) for you.  It can be helpful to keep a logbook of your experience in order to look back and recognize changes, as incremental improvement may not be as obvious.  This method of health care is radically different than the pharmaceutical approach, and requires you to be engaged with and committed to your healing journey.

First morning urine

The day before your consultation, please refrain from drinking alcohol, eating anything that is very spicy, greasy or heavy, eating excessively or not enough, and sexual intercourse.  This is to ensure an accurate reading of your pulse and urine, which can be distorted by those factors.  Please bring an early morning urine sample collected mid-stream from your first urine of the morning with you to every consultation.  This should be collected into a clean glass container with a tight fitting lid.
