This is a really simple nourishing drink to help support deep restful sleep, using ingredients you probably have around the house. Since this is a food medicine, it can be consumed by anyone without contraindications (barring lactose intolerance). In fact, it’s wonderful for children and the elderly as well as all ages in between!
Use whole, organic/local cow’s milk. This is important – all kinds of milk have different qualities, and the nature of whole cow’s milk is a balance of not too warm or cool and smooth, and is therefore beneficial for all types of constitutions when prepared in the following way.
- ½ cup milk
- ½ cup water
- Fresh nutmeg
- (optional) powdered cardamom
- Pad of butter
- Pinch of sea salt
- Honey or maple syrup (to taste)
Measure equal parts milk and water into a small pot. You will reduce it by about ¾, so allow for that when you decide how much to make. Grate a generous amount of fresh nutmeg in, and cardamom if you like that too (to taste). Add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup, a pinch of sea salt, and a pad of butter. Cook at medium-high just until the liquid starts to bubble at the edges, then turn it down to low. If you want it be frothy, mix vigorously with a whisk in the last few minutes of simmering. Let it simmer on low until it has reduced down to ¾ part, then drink! (For example, if you started with ½ cup of milk and ½ of water, simmer it down until it’s about ¾ cup total).
